About Kate

WillowWorks is a pet project of photographer and entrepreneur Kate Taylor. Kate is based in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and operates WillowWorks out of Coastal Pottery Studio at The Mill at Shady Lea.

Kate didn’t think this hobby would turn into such a big source of happiness but a few years after first taking a pottery class, she decided to “go for it” and thus, WillowWorks was created to market and sell her pottery work.

frequently asked questions

FAQ's

What kind of clay do you use?

I use Laguna brand stoneware clay, meant for functional pottery such as plates, bowls and mugs; but also great for sculpture and decorative pieces. Some of the clay I use has grog, or small hard bits in it that come through the glaze firing looking like little speckles. Some is smooth white clay.

Can I put your pottery in the dishwasher/oven/microwave?

Yes, every piece I create (unless explicitly noted on the listing) is dishwasher, oven and microwave safe. Over time, some glazes may fade with repeated dishwasher cleaning cycles. If it’s a high-use piece, I recommend washing by hand just to be safe.

Pieces that are not safe to put in the dishwasher, oven and microwave may be that way because of the glaze (some glazes are not food/water safe) and/or firing technique (raku pieces should never be put in the dishwasher as they are not water tight).

What happens if an item I purchase breaks during shipping?

I insure all shipments through USPS and will refund my customers for any damaged pieces. I wrap everything very well for shipping and label the boxes as “fragile”.

Do you accept commissions?

I do accept commissions but as with most art forms, ceramic pieces are very difficult to predict exactly how they will look in the end. There are variables throughout the entire process that may have a big effect on the finished product. For me, this is part of the challenge and charm of this art form, but for someone with a rigid vision of what they want to end up with, it can be very frustrating. I’m happy to talk with you about your ideas and see if I’m a good fit to bring them to life.
